Jul 13, 2022A gold pan is a shallow metal or plastic dish, generally 40 cm or so in diameter, used to scoop up gravel. The prospector adds water to the gravel and then, using a rocking motion, swirls away lighter materials until, hopefully, only gold flakes or nuggets remain. It's labourious, and often fruitless.
